161583363 726719501358175 3863354987299498327 oThe “Wari Saubhagya” Programme secures a prominent place in the ‘Vision of Prosperity’ ,the policy statement of His Excellency the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakse. The main objective of “Wari Saubhagya” Programme is to upgrade agriculture based economy and the living standard of farmers by adjusting the rural paddy field bound tanks, weirs and the irrigation system.

Accordingly, the Elle Wewa Reservoir project was inaugurated today: 19.3.2021 with the patronage of the Minister of Water Supply Hon. Wasudewa Nanayakkara, Minister of Irrigations, State Minister of National Security, Disaster management and Home Affairs Hon. Chamal Rajapakse and with the participation of other Ministers and Members of Parliament and farmers at Weeralagala, Panamura in Embilipitiya.

The Chief Resident Engineer office of the Ellewewa Project Embilipitiya reveals that the cost estimated for this project is Rs. 1532 million and that the water capacity of the reservoir is 1.91 million cubic meters. 28 hectares are to be submerged at the full reservoir level ; the length of the dam is 200 metres and the width of the top of the dam is 06 metres and height is 24 metres.

This project has the capacity to supply irrigation water to cultivate 1127 Acres paddy land currently available in both Yala and Maha seasons as well as 350 Acres new lands to be cultivated.

In addition, some of the other objectives of this project are ; to provide drinking water under Kolonna drinking water scheme for the domestic use of the people in the Divisional Secretary’s Divisions of Embilipitiya and Kolonna; cultivating in an interim season apart from the main two seasons; establishing fresh water fishery, keeping the ground water levels at a higher level throughout the year, contributing to the tourist industry and development of infrastructure facilities of the area.
